Helicopter lifts outmoded air conditioners off plant's roof

WALTHAM, MA:
Neighbors of the former Raytheon complex on Seyon Street were treated to an unusual site Saturday Morning. At 7:30 a.m., a helicopter hired by Accutemp Engineering Inc., of Watertown swooped down again and again, plucking huge outmoded air conditioning units off the roof and depositing them in the yard.

"We removed 40 - odd pieces of obsolete air conditioning," said Bob Webster, owner of Accutemp. The units weigh about 3000 pounds each; the helicopter can handle up to 10,000 pounds, he said. The operation took weeks of planning and an hour and a half to carry out, Webster said.
The helicopter company, Carson Helicopter Services of Pennsylvania, flew in several days before hand...and went through a dry run. Members of the Waltham Police and Fire department helped supervise the operation. Webster has used helicopters four times in the 23 years since he's been an owner of the company. The helicopter did an hour and a half what it would have taken a crane at least three days to do, he said… |
